I was present in St. George's Hall (Bradford) at the Yorkhire Area
Champs. section as the results were announced in 1997 .... and like you
was more than a little surprised that Carlton Main also came higher up
the frame than Dyke ..... but as far as I know the Dyke lads were all in
the bar and not in the auditorium as you suggest .... and according to
one source all that bothered them about the result was the daunting
prospect of having to take part again next year!!

IMO it does ALL bands good to experience the unpredictability of the BB contest .... God it
took my band long enough to finally get out of the 4th section ..... and
here we are about to face (& hopefully overcome) the challenge of
promotion to the 2nd within the space of only 3 years (and that is more
than enough kudos for me to keep wanting to take part), but I agree it
can be boring to listen to up to 20 slightly different performances of
the same testpiece .... so sympathise with those people who play in
contesting bands but would rather do something else both before & after
they've played (you'll catch me doing likewise I'm sure!)

Cheers!
