We really need to define the use of the word professional here - like mos=
t
of you, I have played with amateurs who have a very professional approach=

to their music making - also played with professionals with a totally
amateur approach! Paying money doesn't mean you get a better player/band
member!

>>However, in that time bands hired professional players just for the
contest because their own players were not good enough, or they did not
have enough players and so on. The bands with the best relations, the
highest bid and so on,... won the contest.
I refer all to my comments earlier - paid by the gig, paid by retainer,
what's the difference?

Adopting this in the UK would sort a few of the top bands out!

Here here!

Most of us could not afford to pay these people! Fortunately, there are a=

lot of pro's (often peripatetic teachers) out there who want to play in
bands and don't want money for it - it's simply a hobby. There is no doub=
t
that the youngsters in the band gain from having this sort of experience
in
the bandroom. Even if we could afford to fill the bandroom with paid
people, I for one wouldn't be happy to have to contest on limited
rehearsals - I'm sure I speak for many other conductors who take bands
outside of the top section nationally.

We could also do with remembering that there are sections other than the
Championship - the bands most exposed to the issues most have raised are
those at the top ie; champ. section, have money, prestige etc. Those bands=

represent less than 25% of the total number of bands in the UK.

>Should Belgium adapt its rules?

IMHO. not just Belgium, the whole lot should throw away the rule books an=
d
get on with making music before rules and regulations strangle the moveme=
nt
to death.
