When your asked to entertain an audience for an hour or two, I can't see that it really matters how you do it, as long as they enjoy it. In competetive situations the bands are limited to 25 ( or whatever applies where you are) on stage and this will probably preclude other performers. I don't think we would want to get into the situatuation of using 'others' in competitions, else it could be a case of money driving the results. The bands I have been with here, (Woolston, and St Kilda) have been fortunate to be very good, and blessed with some very creative and imaginative people, who have put together some extremely successfull shows. I say shows because perhapes, most of the time, this is what we in brass bands, have to deliver now. It may not be realistic to expect people to come to listen to even a top band in concert all on its own. Often a solo artist, and supporting artists are the means of drwing people along, either because you have a big name soloist, or by using other groups, you widen your population base from which to draw. I understand in Engalnd you have a much larger population to support a band concert, but in New Zealand we don't have the numbers, so the experience has to be a little bit extra special, to compete for those numbers.
