Martin, 
I do tend to agree that most of the decent sop players live north of
Watford gap but there are some that don't one in particular that springs
to life is Greame Lewis that used to play for Sun Life, his quiet
playing can be excellent. 
My top three would be 

1) Alan Wycherley
2) Pete Roberts - remember the Grimethorpes Classic Brass CD - virtually
all sop features
3) Craig Bennett

If we were allowing Martin Winter he would certainly be in my top 3.   

For my tastes a sop player needs to be able to blend in with a band as
well as ride over it.
