My fellow bandsmen, A lot of discussion has gone on about a person's motivation to play in a brass band, prompted by the fact that the ISB chose to present a devotional thought or sermon in their recent concert with Black Dyke. For my fellow Salvationist bandsmen participating in this discussion, may I offer that our motivation (the right reason?) to participate in a Salvation Army musical group is to praise, worship and glorify God, and ultimately win souls for Him (i.e., accomplish the aim of our church). Note that I don't limit these goals to bandsmen. Do people who are religious participate in brass bands in spite of the fact that they hate band music, just because it's the "right thing to do"? Of course not. There is not a person who participates in a group who does not enjoy what they're doing, who does not want to be there, whatever their other motivations, whatever the group. I know of people in my church who disapprove of the fact that I participate in an "outside" band. They feel that I'm somehow tarnishing my God-given talent by using it in a secular environment. I wish that they would all just grow up. Comments?
