Craig, (good to see you at Pontins by the way)
The new qualifying system has been explained a few times on the list
and I will try to do one more time.

The top 4 bands at the national finals get a bye to the next years
finals.

However they still have to compete at their relevant area contests to
obtain local area grading points.

Therefore their final postions at the the area contest only count for
points, not qualification.

Example.

North West area 1998.

1st	Fodens
2nd	Faireys
3rd	JJB
4th	Wingates

If the above were the results Fodens and Faireys would get high
ranking points for the area table (to avoid relegation to Section 1)
and JJB and Wingates would qualify for the finals (Fodens and Faireys
having a bye)

Then, if in the Finals JJB get 3rd to Fodens and Faireys all three
bands will get a bye and although still competing at the area tow
EXTRA bands would get through at the area.
This system works well in favour of the stronger areas as the above
example illustrates.

Hope this is clear.
