An interesting coincidence, I read in the British Bandsman this week 
(issue 4960) that the British Open Solo contest (Saturday 1st November) was 
won by a soprano player - not from Yorkshire, the North West or even
Bournemouth, but from Ireland.

The results of the Senior Solo section (taken from the Bandsman) were:

1. Mark Ruddock (Soprano) Laganvale Band
2. M. Hutcherson (Euphonium) BTM
3. I. Wright (?) Thorntons
