>From time-to-time the Sydney Citadel Band puts on a concert, sometimes with one or other of the A-grade Sydney Brass Bands. Their music is always excellent, thank goodness they don't contest! They include a little religious presentation in their concerts; this is usually expected and does not offend the non-religious persons in the audience, as far as I can judge. Phil. Thank you for your posting, The reason there was some concern in the Nationals Celebration Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, is the chappie who gave a religious presentation on behalf of the Salvation Army just went on and on and ended up like a sermon that lasted for about 30 minuets. most of the people I spoke to afterwards including S/A people said they were embarrassed. I know in the UK we have Ex Salvation Army musicians and members in our associations involved in our brass band movement and we do live in harmony with them. over the last few years the Salvation Army have been getting more involved with our Brass Band Movement selling there music to outside bands, recording facilities and retail business popping up belonging to Ex Salvationist. music arrangers, composers are also getting more involved in our brass band movement too. I have no grudge with the SA. My wife's family belongs to the Chalk Farm S/A. but I think we all should play on a level playing field. I would like to see them purchase and play some of our music, invite our own arrangers and composers to do work for them, and ask brass members near there local s/a corp to join them in there music making if they wish to do so. they use to make there own musical instrument now they are supplied by outside manufactures. I personally think their. music is traffic when played in the right contexts. When Eric Ball was commissioned to compose for the Nationals the five pieces that were played at the Nationals they were not involved with the medium of the salvation army. also Ray Steadman- Allen wrote a piece Seascapes. but over the past few years we are getting pieces that are outlined with the redemption themes and salvation army type of writing. if they are going to write music and get involved in our National Contest and brass band movement, I would like to see them move from this type of writing, most of the music that I have played and listen to that belong to the Salvation Army are brilliant arrangements and compositions and they are full of religious tones and always finish with Hannah carrying her banner ;) rightly so, there is a time and a right place for it. I would like to see a little more open opinions on this subject, because we have a lot of S/A members involved with the salvation army and our outside bands when the salvation army play host to our outside bands we respect there whishes and demands If they are guest to our outside bands we hope they respect our whishes and demands too.
