Again I must Comment on what Evan Howells wrote about SA bands and in particular the ISB at the National Championships. I can only reiterate th= at what they did ( A HALF HOUR is a bit of an exaggeration, possibly 15 minutes interviewing Clarence and 5 mins with his bible reading and explanation of the next piece) was what every SA band SHOULD DO, and obviously the organisers were not aware of the so called public opion or they would have never have asked the ISB to play, because the ISB could never have played without the criteria of including a spiritual time. I cannot believe that Salvationists could have been embarrased, embarrased about what, I with some friends were certainly not embarrased. If Salvationists were embarrased about what Kevin Ashman did, then they oug= ht to be questioning their Salvationism (please pass that statement on to yo= ur Salvationist Friends Evan). Of course all SA music is about salvation of= souls etc, what else could it be about. Why do these organisers ask SA composers to write test pieces ? if they are not happy with the content w= hy do it. Concerning the release of SA music to non army bands, nobody from the SA is making bands buy this 'religious' music, so why are you buying it. Just because I buy something from M&S doesn't mean they have to buy something from me. SA composers are no better or worse than other Brass Band composers, of course they are not , but they write for a specific type of= musical combination where sometimes the actual dots are secondary to the meaning behind the tune. As with any organisation, club or whatever there= are rules to be kept, and one of the SA rules on music is that SA bands cannot play music which is not published by the SA without permission. Ho= w can you sensibly say that SA composers should move away from writing musi= c with a religious, soul saving theme, when the central core of the movemen= t is religion and soul saving. I don't hear of many SA bandsman knocking the Dykes and Fodens of this world so why is it that players from outside bands (mainly can I say from= recent experience former SA bandsmen (ex is not the right word)) knock SA= bands and their music? If you don't agree with it , don't buy the music, don't attend any musical festivals where SA bands are performing - have t= he courage of your convictions SA BANDS DO Keith Hender Bandmaster Cannock (UK) SA Band e-mail KeithHender @Compuserve.com -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to listserver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
