Nothing would surprise me about the Reading contest. I took part in
the (Second Section? on Tintagel) once and when the adjudicator
(Lynn Morgan) came out he announced that it had been so dark that he
couldn't see the score; the same band came second and fourth that
day, enabling another band to come fifth out of four competitors.
(Honest!) It really was dark - I couldn't see the basses.

A few years earlier I had seen another band (Pangbourne) begin without
their conductor (who had apparently been competing in the same
contest at a different venue); he joined them part way through.
Contest officials had insisted that they would be disqualified if
they didn't start, so...

The test pieces used to be chosen by band representatives at the AGM.
I went along one year when they took a decision not to choose Year
of the Dragon on the chairman's insistence that it was "too easy - a
second section piece". Oddly enough, they selected it the following
year after BBS had won the European on it.

Best of luck to all competing at Reading this weekend!!!

(I won't be there)

David
