Now your into the most important item in the brass band movement (I think).
Is the most important thing to go by the main-road, and thereby win contests,
or is the most important thing to play with good sound, and produce good
music. (NOT loud music)???????

In the 70 and 80 the Dyke sound was something really special. (just hear the
High Peak CD. The tecnical playing is terrible, but in my oppinion it is one
of the best Dyke recording ever => they got the sound right) But what is so
special with Dyke today? OK they got a history as the most winning band in
history, but what so....... Today they are playing like everybody else. Dyke
is NOT the special band they once where.

As you already have discovered, in my opinion good sound is much more important
to a brass band than loud and tecnical brilliant playing. What is different
between a traditional brass band and a symphony orc. brass section? They use
trumpets and dont have the brassband soud. Today they sound almost like a
brass band, and that is NOT because they are working themseves into the
brassband sound, but because the brassbands are working themseves into the
orcestral sound. We are about to loose one of the most special things about
brassbands => THE BRASS BAND SOUND
