Hi All,

We have just had the approval from the National Lottery of our grant
claim for new instruments and we are now looking at what's available and
at what price.

I am a cornet player myself and after recent reports on Besson quality I
am reluctant to go for the Sovereign Cornets and Horns.  Our conductor
is a former professional trombone player (29 years with the BBC Symphony
Orchestra) and says we should go for American trombones (Bach, Holton,
King, Conn).  Another local band to us has recently kitted itself out
with a full set of Courtois with very mixed feelings from their players.

There are still many questions to be answered before we actually place
our order, like are there any real benefits of four valve baritones over
the conventional three valve models;  will there be any detriment to the
overall sound and general intonation by getting instruments from
different manufacturers or is there a real benefit in getting a full set
from one manufacturer; etc. etc.

What can players on this mailing list recommend from their own
experiences of current new instruments.
