The adjudicator's opinion of what is musical may differ from yours (or
that of your conductor). When City of Oxford competed at the First
Section National Finals last year, our conductor "misinterpreted" the
second movement of the test-piece (James Curnow's "Sinfonietta" - yuk!).
That is, the adjudicator didn't like the way we chose to play it. Our
conductor thought that we played it more musically than many of the other
bands by maintaining a constant rhythm throughout. The adjudicator (I
think it was one of the Childs brothers) disagreed.

At the end of the day, the results of a brass band contest are
the opinions of one man on one day. What he sees as musical may depend on
how many eggs he has for breakfast on the day of the contest...

As far as James Scott goes, I find it hard to believe that he is obsessed
with technicality over musicality. He has been around for a long time,
and I think he probably listened out for the musical aspects (including
tone, band sound, expression etc.) at least as much as the technical
aspects of the test-piece.

Regards,

Cameron
