For many people, contesting is a brass band's "raison d'etre". Everyone going to a contest knows that the judge may not agree with their interpretation of a piece, but contesting is not just about winning (although it is more fun when you do win!). Contesting is all about working as a team, striving to achieve the best possible result for everyone in the band. It is about comradeship and camaradery. It is about musical (as well as social) unity. On top of that, contesting also provides all the members of a band with the chance to improve their own playing and to play serious music rather than "The Floral Dance". Of course, contesting often involves drinking *lots* of beer too. It may involve spending ludicrous amounts of money at trade stands or kebab vans, but such expenditure is voluntary and is not a crucial ingredient of a contest. Brass band contests are great. Even without beer.
