The band was Hawthorn City in 1982?  The conductor was sqn Ldr Laurie Hicks
and the principal
cornet was the conductor of Y.B.S. David King.  In 1924 the Newcastle
Steelworks Band toured G.B. and were successful in a major competition at
Halifax where they soundly beat Black Dyke Mills to  win the contest.  They
then went to the British Open where Black Dyke didn't compete and won that.
 The Newcastle band then went to London for the Nationals (of course you
Brits wouldn't allow that to happen now they would have to start in the
third section) and I think they were placed third, B.D.M. winning on that
occasion.
