alternative instrument for a horn player

I think not <grrr>

>If you want....but Flugel is a HORN, not a cornet and definately not a >trumpet
>and should be approached as a Horn or it sounds terrible!!

Exactly! There is a trend in modern arrangements for the Flugel horn to
be treated as an extension of the front row cornets - too many pieces now
just have the flugel playing in unison with them, or if not they have the
poor flugel player screeching around the top notes which is not where a
flugel sounds best.

I used to be a solo cornet player and spent a short time as principle, I
then changed bands and swapped over to play flugel as there was a
desperate need there. I have been in my current seat now for nearly 3
years and only now is my poor flugel really sounding as it should. I was
always being told that I was just a cornet player having a go at flugel.
It has taken much practise to develop the flugel tone and do justice to my
Bach Strad Flugel.

Flugel players are a special breed of people (bit like the sop player) as
we are the only two players in the band who don't have someone else
playing the same instrument sat next to us. So instead of giving them a
hard time - congratulate them for doing a great job (IMHO anyhow!!)

Cheers
