Merits of contests (was Re: Protest)

Yes indeed, all the above are very good reasons for going to band contests -
I enjoy the social aspects of contesting as much as anyone, (especially the
drinking).  But it does rather give me the point that, at contests, the
activity of making music for aesthetic reasons comes a rather poor second to
all the other aspects of contests listed above.

I have a brilliant idea - organise a brass festival which has all the
attributes of a contest - trade stands, socialising, beer etc - but without
the contest!  Instead, invite bands to pop up onto the stage, if they feel
like it, and just play some music!  As a really radical step, how about
advertising the event to the general public and charging them money to
listen!  We might even entertain them!  Do you think it might catch on?
