Just stick to the instruments you play. There is a wealth of fine music written for the traditional British brass band. I see nothing wrong with substituting french horns and trumpets, if that's what it takes to get these scores played. I have had many of my brass band charts played by college bands who have only symphonic instruments at their disposal. To me, the sound is just as exciting. There is a lot to be recommended for both the saxhorn band and the symphonic brass band. For me, the ultimate band would be a blend of both worlds.
