40 years ago, Ernie Edwards, then Bandmaster of the Salvation Army
Tottenham Citadel Band, made exactly that point at a music leaders'
institute at Jackson's Point, just North of Toronto. Over the years as a
bandmaster I've tried to remember this but given the nature of the
brassband movement, it is often really hard to accomplish since many
players are more concerned with personal gratification.
One of the things that makes Eric Leidzen's music difficult to bring off
is that, as a professional arranger, he expected 2nd and 3rd parts to
balance with leads and arranged accordingly. When it doesn't happen the
music sounds flat and dull. Took me years to realize this.
