Hi all, Have just finished a 2 week tour of Thailand as MD of The Melbourne Transit Band. We had a ball. Rehearsed nearly every day and the band played beautifully. Our major functions were to play for the opening of the Hellfire Pass Museum, play at the Anzac Day Dawn Service and 11am morning service. We did some other small jobs as well. Have read all your comments re instrumentation etc. and offer this thought: For years now i have been advocating using other instruments for variety of sound. These past 2 years with Tasmanias Jubilee Brass we used 4 t'bones, 4 t'horns with 2 doubling french horn on selected items. The f ' horns added a new sound dimension and power when required. (FYI, F'horns have a much bigger range than t'horn) Like Adrian, i too see a use for trumpets ( Brass Band of Battle Creek is a fantastic example) and the idea of 2 flugels is a beauty. The Melb. Transit Band took 5 saxes and guitar with them for the dance jobs we did. The flugel player doubles elec. bass. Four of the cornets played trumpet. (and rightly so) When we did BB programs we used the saxes in the band, against the better wishes of the purists, but they softened their attitude when they experienced the extra colour and edge. It also afforded us a couple of great soloists when we opened up the *jazz* numbers. One of the percussionists is a very competent flute/picc player and proved very handy and appropriate for the closing section of Colonel Bogey On Parade. (the whistling bit.) The public response to all this was fabulous. As a unit we were much more flexible with programming and for those who had not the chance of working alongside saxes it was enlightening. Point is this. DON'T LIMIT YOUR PUBLIC AVAILABILITY AND APPEAL BY A LIMITING/ CONSTRAINING SET OF RULES. It's good to be back home, and i look forward to more of your writings. BTW, some of us managed to get together and have a drink at the Nationals, Monkey. Just takes a little initiative and 'want to'.
