A parallel contrast can be seen in audiences for contests and concerts.
Bands playing in concerts are buoyed up by a prevailing spirit of goodwill
from the audience - they have, after all, paid good money and want to be
entertained.  Contest audiences, on the other hand, are composed almost
entirely of players from other bands and their supporters, all of whom are
secretly willing the band on stage to cock it up, in order to improve their
own band's chances.
