Re: Re[2]: Smith & Watkins cornets

Hey!

I don't think that that response was "petty". In fact, it was (IMHO) right
on the mark! ONe's equipment choice is a very personal one, much like
chosing a friend or lover.

For example, years ago, when the Illinois Brass Band first started, I
realized that I'd need a cornet, or a cornet-like instrument. Being a
symphony trumpet player primarily, (especially at that time), I was
concerned about spending money on an instrument that I would use in an
entirely volunteer group, whose longevety was in question (as I suppose all
new groups are).

To that end, I remembered seeing a Yamaha rotary valve C trumpet for sale
at a local shop, some 9 months earlier. I went in and sure enough, there
it was. I tried it and fell in love with it! The shop proprietor told me
that it had been there almost a year, and lots of people had tried it, but
I was the first to actually like it.

"Like it"?! It's the best trumpet I've ever played! Now, of course,
playing principal cornet in a brass band, transposing on a C instrument is
a lot of work, so I eventually bought a Getzen cornet, and like it very
much, but the point of this story is that one's equipment must fit the
user, no matter what anyone else thinks. It's the sound that matters.

Ok?
