Vibrato

I think one of the main reasons brass band players use vibrato is that
it sounds good! I used to sound like a farmyard animal with bronchitis
when I played the cornet. Since I started using vibrato, the bronchitis
has cleared up altogether. In general, vibrato adds warmth and breadth
to the tone. Without it, a long note can sound very flat and dull. Using
vibrato has also helped me focus on air-flow through the instrument,
which has in turn improved all other facets of my playing. Vibrato
can be used to cover up bad tuning, bad a good band should be able to do
that by using their ears anyway - the vibrato is just to improve the
quality of the sound.

Long live Philip McCann!!,
