Re: Vibrato

Ron,

I'm interested in your opinion, particularly in light of the last two
english soloists we have had at gala concerts at the Australian nationals
(Philip McCann and Russell Gray). Both I would have to say are pure english
cornet players, and maybe it's something to do with the stage they are at
in their careers, but to my mind, Russell put on a far more exciting and
interesting programme (and some say more technical performance).
Wish I could play like Philip, but wish more that I could play like Russell
:-)

I've just received my May issue of B.B.W. What a delight to read in "The
life of Brian" quote"when he's on song, his lovely unaffected tone makes
you wonder why so many of our excellent players are hell-bent on making
their cornets sound like trumpets". When are all these so called experts
(mainly trumpet players or people who double on both) going to stop
knocking the best of the British cornet players for their sound(mainly the
use of VIB).Most of the contributors don't seem to know that they are not
the same instrument, one a little longer than the other. The true Brass band
cornet player wouldn't waste time playing a trumpet as it will detract from
their sound. After all this is a Brass band list!!! And why over the last 2
years has Phillip McCann been subjected to so much criticism ,but then he's
probably never heard of most of you people. And to close this little missel
(something like a Papal bull) ,don't quote to me the couple of players that
can do both very well they are the exception not the rule.
