We also tried this using a tenor horn - unfortunatelty, it didn't work for
us at all so our Sop will be playing it this summer.

In addition to those already mentioned, there are plenty of arrangements
of "Summertime", I used to play the Howard Snell arrangement out of
preference. Also, the Pagliacci arrangement (can't recall what it's
called)  is worth considering.
Finally, may not be to everyones taste but you could also try the "Queen
of the Night's Aria"
