Adrian......
I think you have a new student on your hands... be sure and send a bill,
but learn to spell his name..... It's Alastair.......right Alastair? (just
kidding with you Adrian)
Sorry I haven't answered your private note... I will do that very soon.

I agree with you about that 4th note in the trombones. I most always put
in into the first baritone... in fact, over here in the US, many baritone
players (if not most) are trombone players and I actually have asked them
to shift instruments and pick up a trombone. I have even labeled it valve
trombone for those that are not familiar with a slide. So far I have not
seen anyone do it but I figure it's worth a try. Bobby Brookmeyer is not
playing in any brass bands that I know of.

Sometimes as you say, you must treat the trombones as a trio to get that
section sound and then place the euphonium on the bottom note with these
words..NO VIBRATO PLEASE. This is usually when it's inconvenint for the
1st baritone to help.
Some times I prefer the 1st baritone to play the bottom rather than to be
sandwiched
between 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd. I also steer away from the bass
trombone on the 5th... As a bass trombone player I know how that feels. I
have even left the 5th out entirely if I had to. Eb Tuba (bass-sorry) is a
good option depending on the cord.
I arranged "Holiday for Trombones" (David Rose) and I had wished for a 4th
trombone as I wrote every measure. It still works........

Wow ! We are all starting to agree..... this is no fun.......Please
disagree with me..

Alastair...... A - L - A - S -T - A - I - R...........see I'm trying to
help Alistair..." :) "
