From: Kees & Michelle Dogger <dogger@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > I feel that Brass Bands should indeed be evolving into something which > can produce the "symphonic" sounds. This is not to say that they should > ignore their heritage and historic sound ( or instrumentation ) but > that they should augment. I understand the fears of the traditionalists, but evolution is a fact of life. It cannot be prevented. The brass band we have today is very much different to that of 150 years ago. I know, I was there :-) We have bigger bore instruments now because we prefer a darker tone to that used 150 years ago. We have improved manufacture of instruments and aids to tuning with 4th valves and compensating systems. We use Bb/F trombones instead of G trombones. The instrumentation we have today is not the same as we had 150 years ago. The trombones played in tenor clef 150 years ago. The music we play today is totally different to what we played 150 years ago. It's anyone's guess what the brass band will be like in the year 2150, but you can be sure it will be very alien to what we have now. We will probably be plugging our "sound modules" into a wall socket and operating them by thought transference. We won't even need to get on our bikes to visit the band practice room, but use the phone lines instead. But by that time phones might also be extinct. > Kees Dogger - Conductor Bairnsdale Citizens Band ( and F Horn player ) > ( the dreaded "F" word ) One of my favourite sounds, Kees.
