What has worked very well for my band is presenting "theme" concerts, ie. choosing subject matter for a particular concert then choosing the music to suit. Past themes have been "A Tribute to the Americas" "Romance in Brass" (Valentine's Day concert), "A Night at the Opera", "Andrew Lloyd Webber" etc. etc. One mistake that bands constantly make is trying to be "all things to all people" .... within a two-hour time slot! We advertise the concert, drag a mixture of people along, some of whom like classical, some like jazz, some enjoy show tunes, some will want to sing along <shudder> and then bombard them with a programme of pieces that possibly one or two of which will be to their liking. But at the end of the night, not one person will have enjoyed every piece. Bands would be better off pleasing all those people over a longer time-frame, give the jazz lovers and evening of jazz, the Opera lovers an evening of Opera and so on. In a word... diversify. One golden rule for all bands...... Don't play down to your audience by playing garbage. Another thing we could work on is how we advertise ourselves. How many times do you see a poster for a concert that says "Brass Spectacular" or "Blah Blah Brass Band in Concert"? We spend a lot of time advertising who is playing rather than what is being played. Go into most good CD shops and look at the classical racks; you will not find a rack for Berlin Phil, one for Chicago Symphony, one for CBSO etc. they are all in alphebetical order by composer. Now look at the Egon CD catalogue and you will find Bands listed first, then a limited selection of some of the pieces played. Band people may select this way, but Joe Public doesn't, and probably couldn't tell the difference between Black Dyke and Durnovaria Silver Band anyway! What I'm saying is, music lovers are interested in the music first, then the performer/conductor. IMHO :) Cheers, Adrian -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to listserver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
