Re: Promoting brass bands

Alec

There is a lot of Tosh spoken by people who should know better. Like
for example, when I called Demon Help Desk yesterday 'cos I couldnt get
at a piece of mail which turned out to be 6 MB (no probs/abnormalities
there for me, Im in the biz) and I got some Turkey on the phone telling
me that Demon (and all other ISP's) only support 64k and my 6Mb was my
fault because my machine was busy dealing with the stream so Demon
couldnt send it. He blathered on some more but I shan't bother this
august readership with that hogwash.

I told him I'd been in the business 20 odd years and knew a busy machine
when I saw one. It cut no ice. I told him Norton Futilities said that
my processor (Pent 200 Pro) was 1% busy so it was hardly preoccupied
with something else. It went over his head. I told him my Modem light
was not flashing. No encs, nothing. nada. Zippo. El Cabigio. But he
was suitably unimpressed.

So I'd better come back on Topic before I get flamed here, but the point
of the story is that the older I get the more everyone else around me
knows about topics I thought I knew quite a bit about. So unless it is
going to earn me a crust or I'm arguing in my spare time (Monty Python
circa 1966) I tend to "accept" most people are more knowledgable than
me. And this list is full of topic experts, so I tend to keep my more
serious observations to myself unless I think I can add a little to the
proceedings (like agreeing with your previous message).

Talking a load of Tosh and speaking boldly need not necessarily go
together but all too often do.

So pick the bones out of THAT boise!

happy bank hols to the Brits...
