Trond wrote... > > Versatile means usable for a lot, but not real good at anything. I am sure that "Versatile" can also mean GOOD and maybe even BRILLIANT at BOTH or ALL activities. Ever heard James Morrison? Many musicians these days are expected to double. In the symphony orchestra the 2nd flute doubles piccolo, the 2nd oboe doubles cor anglais, the 2nd clarinet doubles bass clarinet, the 2nd bassoon doubles contrabassoon, also alto flutes and Eb clarinets are used, trumpeters double on cornet and piccolo, trombonists double on euphonium, tubists double on a variety of instruments. In the big band the trumpeters are expected to double flugelhorn, the saxophonists are expected to play a variety of saxes, clarinets and flutes, sometimes oboe and on the rare occasion, bassoon. The 4 reed players of the Henry Mancini Orchestra played a total of 24 instruments between them. None of these players are specialists at these doubles. If they are, then they are not specialists at their main instrument. But don't tell me that any of these instrumentalists are inferior players. If they were, they wouldn't be playing in the top name orchestras of the world.
