Alec
Some people set out in life to be different/obtuse for the sake of it!! I
suspect that Geoffrey Brand is one of them, and I have the feeling that you
and I will never agree on anything.

I would never say that Grimethorpe Aria is rubbish. I have listened to it
and saw it performed live at the QE Hall. I don't like it but I would never
dream of questioning it's worth or the right of others to feel differently.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that you probably like Songs for B.L.

I have made some specific comments below.

I would suggest that it is accepted that a band that plays all of the
music together, in tune, with good soloists is better than one that has
loose ensemble, poor tuning and poor soloists. This forms the outline of a
basis for adjudication and in the event of two performances of equal
technical and musical merit a personal preference for style or
interpretation can be applied . If one takes your argument to it's ultimate
conclusion an adjudicator placing a poor 4th section band in front of Dyke
because he prefers the interpretation would be justified.

I accept the basis of your arguments generally but must say that I do not
see that they have a practical application in contesting. If this form of
judging and result becomes the norm there will be chaos and a rapid
disappearance of many of the bands affected.
