I appreciate the diversity of our new found friends. We are enriched by the experiences they bring to the Brass Band movement and all the better for it. I do think however that they must understand, we are not looking to be changed. The Brass Band is not broke, in need of repair or diversification. In fact, here in North America it is more popular than it has ever been. The impact of our friends from sources such like the American university and symphonies have already turned our trombones to sliding euphoniums and remodled our cornets to become short model trumpets with shepherds crooks. Thank goodness, we are getting a handle on the cornets, but I'm afraid the large bore tenor trombones are here to stay and as a result, the edge (non-conical) sound of the band frankly been misplaced usually to the cornets playing on trumpet mouthpieces with cornet shanks. The experimentation with other instruments is fine for certain groups but the majority of us are a part of the Brass Band movement because we love what it is, not what the newcomers think it could be.
