Re: Versatility and Doubling - Reply

I would just like to second his thoughts, and say that his posting
was a well argued, well presented, a pleasure to read (something of a
refreshing change for this list recently, as it happens).

The key phrase in his opening remark is the one about a "thoughtful
approach". There are too many players of both instruments who play
well, but with little thought for what they are trying to achieve. I
believe the player is more important than the instrument in producing
the sound, so that a capable player - not necessarily an exceptional
one - can produce a "cornet" sound on a trumpet, and a "trumpet"
sound on a cornet.

It is a great pity - and this remark is aimed at players of both
instruments, but regrettably applies more to cornet players than to trumpet
players - when individuals try to hide their lack of versatility and
musical imagination behind a smokescreen of "specialisation".
