Picking out a random platter from my olde collection of gramophone records (you remember them, black, vinyl, 12" across, lots of scratches) the other day, I found myself listening to Sounds of Brass Volume 8 (Decca,1973) - Black Dyke, conducted by Geoffrey Brand & Roy Newsome, featuring a piece I had completely forgotten about - Sovereign Heritage, by Jack Beaver (crazy name, crazy guy!!). Sovereign Heritage is quite a mature work, (to my ears anyway, although they are, admittedly, constructed of tin), but I have never heard of Jack Beaver, before or since. Surely it must be a pen name - but for whom? Any ideas, anyone?
