The symphonic wind ensemble (/orchestral winds) works well like this, but the music is for serious players. Very often there is no euph part, which is a little annoying... think wind by 3s and brass by 4s. > > > Unfortunately, with only a bass clarinet, a bassoon and one tuba against 4 > > troms, 2 euphos, 6 trumpets and a multitude of woodwinds.. this leaves it > > all a bit thin and "shreiky" IMHO. > > That may be the band you play in mate, but though the line up can vary according > to score requirements, basically they use 2-3 tubas, plus they have bari sax and > and, more often than not, string bass. To pile on more here, think of a brass band bass section of 4, but playing less chordal divisis, and much more 16 foot unison. Now add 2 bassoons, a contra, a couple of bass clarinets, a pedal clarinet ('scaffolding' and always in the way) a bari sax, string bass or two, a bass trom, 2nd euph.... Weak bass??? This would balance a band of approx 60-70 players. > Norm. > Music is my first love, after Jan and the billies. -- Alastair Wheeler Euphonium & Trombone Fundamental Brass Bass Trombone City of Oxford Brass Band alastair@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.new.ox.ac.uk/~alastair "I am following my fish" -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to listserver@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
