Yesterday (14th June 1998) The National Association of Brass Band Conductors
Young Conductor of the Year Finals took place

The six competitors Neil Aston, Phillip Bailey, David Barringer, Euan
Drysdale, Andrew Snell & Jef Sparkes met the adjudicators at 1pm with the
competition starting at 1-30pm with each candidate haveing only 25 mins to
rehearse the Salford University (and friends) band on the test piece which was
drawn for earlyer in the day.

After the rehearsal stage the competitors each had a viva with the
adjudicators (Elgar Howarth, John Pryce-Jones & Roy Newsome) while food was
enjoyed by the band and NABBC Vice president and guests.

The competetition concluded in the evening with each candidate conducting the
band through a concert performane of their alloted piece.

After much thought and diliberation the adjudicators anounced that in equal
second place, sharing a prize of £250-00 was David Barringer & Euan Drysdale.

The NABBC Young Conductor of the Year winning £1000-00 was Phillip Bailey.
This appeared to be a popular result with the audience who included David
King, James Scott, Nigel Boddice, and many other notable personalitys and
members from the brass band family.

The peices used on the day, and the order  was as follows:

3   Andrew Snell      James Cook - Circumnavigator
4   Phillip Bailey      Triumphant Rhapsody		     1st place
5   Jef Sparkes	The Frogs of Aristophanes
6   Euan Drysdale    Main Street				   Joint
2nd

This was a super day put on by the NABBC with everyone taking part enjoying
the event, and gaining new experiences, contacts & friends.

Well done to all the competitors you all did fantastically well.
