Interesting to see the spice girls getting a mention - personally, I've always held the view that if a band/musician has talent, the fact that I don't like their music doesn't stop them being talented. However, how much of the talent of that particular band is down to them and how much to the producers/session musicians etc who are used ? At least with a good brass band, you know it's them doing all the work! And brass bands don't need to mime either to re-create on stage what they do in the studio as is the case with a lot of chart bands today. There has been much discussion on the list as to the merits of different ways of scoring a piece of music, what instruments to use etc - imho, not enough credit is given to those who do the arranging and reputations of a lot of "lighter" composers are enhanced by the skills of the arrangers they use. Sometimes, of course, the arranger does get more credit - how often have we heard people refer to those wonderful Nelson Riddle Sinatra Charts for instance.
