It's difficult to resist the temptation to pioint out that the only times Australian bands have visited the U.S they have won, quite handsomely: Footscray-Yarraville in the 70s and Hawthorn in 1994. It is undoubtedly true that Australian bands are not a patch on the very top English bands. But neither are most English bands! Remember also that U.S bands may not be striving for the 'English' sound. Battle Creek band (which is a sensational band) on any view does not have an English sound. The players are all professional orchestral or jazz players. That's fine. It is very personal. But the amateur scene is what most of us are interested in.
