Re: Re:War.was Geographic Breakdown

Bloody Australians - Dont know what they're talking about!

Should be misquoted and slandered at every turn.

I suspect I may be the Australian that made the comment about raucous and
loud. It was a comment I made after attending a rehearsal with the
Hathersage Brass Band (UK) which was a very enjoyable experience and my
thanks to Ian Wright for that and also for lighting the match on this
thread. (or dropping me in it.)

The comment was made about Australian Bands - not those from the Hew Hess of
Hay! [clears up one point] I've only observed their marching bands and my
legs don't go at their pace so I must have admiration for them.

If you listen to bands from various countries they tend to have different
styles from a holistic viewpoint. UK bands - melodic, quiet round rich
sound. NZ bands - similar but generally louder. AUS bands - louder again.

For the AUS bands this has been an evolution over the last 40 years with
perhaps the greatest change occurring when Merv Simpson reformed the Fire
Brigade Band somewhere back in the 60s. ff went from 'fairly fearceful' to
becoming a 'force to be frightened of'. Relative dynamics were still
maintained and the sound had to be rich and full.

Raucous is perhaps a misaligned term. To translate for the other hemisphere,
try robust, vibrant or vigorous with a sharper edge than the UK sound. (SA
bands still maintain the more "UK" style.)

To comment on the couple of years that I've played in and listened to brass
bands would be nicking so I'll just open another few TINNY's. (strine)
