Re: Wick plating -Reply

Hi All

Can't claim to be a metallurgy expert but I have seen demonstrations at
classic car events talking about why chrome bumpers etc. go rusty and how
you can put various polishes on to prevent it. If I remember correctly it is
not the chrome that corrodes but the steel under it. Microscopic pores in
the chrome plating let water and salt etc. through and so the corrosion sets
in. Perhaps something similar happens to mouthpieces? Certainly the wheels
and bumpers on my bug go brown very quickly after they have salted the
roads! I can find out which Auto polish they recommend if anyone wants to
try it out on their mouthpiece ;-)

I'm sure I have seen on those adverts for chewing gum that your saliva is
alkaline to combat the acidic secretions of plaque? Hence they claim that
chewing after eating helps prevent tooth decay. If saliva was at all acidic
wouldn't our teeth have all dissolved away?! I thought that it's one of the
arguments for why soft drinks are bad for us and why young children
shouldn't drink too much acidic fruit juice.

Just my tuppence worth.

Best
