The original question was phrased ambiguously, and apparently
I guessed wrong.  Mea culpa.

That's really a shame, Mark. You missed some great music.

What, because it wasn't 2 hours of test pieces?
Sure, there was some music that some might consider "fluff", though
to say "much of the music..." is misleading.  Besides, they weren't there
to contest, and I think they served their intended audience well.

OK, perhaps I left the wrong impression.  I was sort of hyperbolizing
to make my point in defense of Australian bands.  I wasn't saying
that the NYSB is, in general, hard to listen to.  They're obviously 
a great band, and it's nice to have them in our back yard.  What I was
trying to do was point out my surprise in finding that between these
two performances, I found Melbourne to be the more sensitive and
musical performance.  I wouldn't have missed either, though.
