Many people automatically equate the term 'test-piece' > with 'something unlistenable', or 'something requiring me to concentrate for > more than three minutes'. Examples of such pieces include, er, The Force > of Destiny Overture, Carnival Overture etc etc etc!! Surely some mistake?! Yes of course - I agree 100%!!! Its so easy to fall into that trap because for much of the time (i.e. when we rehearse and contest with them) they really are test pieces, and its a convenient term to use to bundle them all together for discussion though there must be better words to use, for all the reasons you give.
