Re: James Shephard Versatile Brass

Roy,

B&R band did a concert last week locally in Brighouse and Jim Shepherd &
Don Bowes (the JSVB manager) came for a listen. I don't know whether its
good timing, but I asked them how the group is doing, and so will be able
to answer your questions.

JSVB has now finished as an organisation and its limited company wound up,
following an anniversary concert recently (25 years I think). This was
done intentionally by them. The group of players are continuing though
under the name 'Versatile Brass', with Simon Wood conducting (he was
previously the bass player). I don't know the full line up, but the cornet
bench is Michael Wildgust, Alan Exley, David Carder & Stephen Clayton.
Kevin Holgate is probably still on trombone.

Jim Shepherd was on the front row with Grimey in Brassed Off.

I don't know if Colin is still playing, but I keep bumping into David Moore
at the odd contest, although I don't know whether he is playing or
conducting.

I hope this info is useful.

Martin.

Around 1978, the JSVB toured Australia and our band had the pleasure of
hosting the group for their weekend in Melbourne. The responsibility for
feeding and looking after David Moore (eupho) and Colin Aspinall (bass)
fell on me I suppose because the euphos and basses are supposed to have
something in common (beer?).

As it happens we did and I enjoyed their visit very much. As I was
listening to one of their recordings today, I wondered what has become of
the group and its members. I'm sure I saw James Shephard sitting in the
cornet line during the Brassed Off movie and we hear a lot about Gordon
Higginbotham over here but I would like to know if David and Colin are
still playing and if so, where.

Cheers,
Roy Taylor
