I'm afraid I gave up the Bandsman a long time ago. As Andy Wooler has intimated in another posting, I too rather got the impression that it waited for the news to come to it, rather than doing what journalists are supposed to do and go out and find the stories. I also got tired of the endless uncritical reviews of concerts and recordings, in which, apparently, no band ever played anything less than brilliantly!! (...a most pleasing performance... you know the sort of thing). Contrast that with the review of Whistle Down The Wind in David Lancaster's recent posting. No fear or favour there. That's the problem with the band press in general, I think - everyone knows everyone and doesn't want to upset them. It's all too incestuous - a musical branch of the Mutual Appreciation Society. Brass Band World magazine is a bit better, but even it shies away from the hard stories people want to read. The report some time ago on McCann's departure from Britannia left me none the wiser on the real reasons behind his going. And as I mentioned in an earlier posting after the European Championships, I had to rely on this list to discover what BBW meant when it talked coyly of unacceptable behaviour on the part of certain bandsmen. It was, apparently, a drinking contest. So what? Why not print it?
