Thought it was a tenet of the band ethic -everyone hates the trombone
section because all trombone players are useless. Next in pecking
order -  percussion players (can't read music or follow the beat),
etc. 

And why can't euphonium players play a pp?

And why are all baritone players too quiet and poor of technique?

And why does the flugel player always have the biggest ego?

This is the universal truth! Excellence improves as you go up up
through the sections to the jolly old Soprano who is either completely
hopeless, or the best player in the band.

Not that I have any bias on this subject...

P.S. I do agree, though, that the recent trend of making trombone
sections work hard certainly puts the pressure on in contests.

P.P.S. There must be more than three good tenor trombone players in
the UK.
