Years ago the Bass trombone player
in our local orchestra who was the local Kosher
buthcher was playing a concert that included
the  William Tell Overture. He was very short,
only about 5'1" adn his arm would not reach 7th 
position so he used a length of string to 
let he slide reach that position. On this occasion during
the storm sequence the string broke and his slide went off the end
of his instrument under the chairs of the Cellos and into the third row.
After that concert he retired from trombone and stuck 
to butchering.
