I can see both sides of the argument. It is useful to have the instruments already on stage and does save a lot of effort lugging the gear around. It can be hazardous though as I found out on one occasion when the timps provided were Ludwig with a different tensioning device which operated in the opposite direction to the instruments rehearsed on. Some very interesting notes were played as a result - although - as you would expect the adjudicators didn't notice.
