well, writing as I do from across the pond...this does bring up one more
issue. I had intended to include it in my last post, but forgot.

It seems from all that I read on this list that so much is written about
competitions and adjudicators that that is all that bands in the UK
do...compete, at least in festivals. Why do I see so little about
multi-band performances which do not contain competitions. Has it just
been that way for so long that the players have been conditioned to expect
the competition aspect, and would not be satisfied any other way? Or are
there non-competition festivals, and because they are by nature less
contentious, they get less notice on this list. (grin, smile)

It think it would be interesting for us in the USA to see a bit about
banding in the UK in contrast to banding in the USA. We do have festivals
here which include competition/evaluation, (also competition for marching
units) to be sure, but they generally are during the high school years of
the players (sometimes college, but much less). What is the background of
what seems to me the proliferation of competition-festivals. Has it to do
with the existance of a rating system? (Which we do not have)

best...and greetings for the coming Holidays!
