But if, in fact, he does speak on behalf of others, then he is 
perfectly entitled to make the point.  And while on that subject, I 
suspect you have misunderstood his comment : it is not the Barber 
Adagio for strings which he objects to, but the idea of arrranging it 
for brass band.

By the way, although I agree with the statement about "the finest of 
its genre" I was a little unclear as to what you meant.  Did you mean 
that the original, as a piece for string orchestra it was the finest? 

Or did you mean that the brass band version, as an example of 
crass, inappropriate and tasteless transcription for an inappropriate 
medium, was a classic example ?

Both statements have significant support in the musical community at 
large, of course.
