Claire wrote p.s. What about a 4-valve horn :) I had one once - a yamaha .... anyone still play with one ? I've got a Suzuki, its got 8-valves and I use it to get to work. Could do with a tune though :-) For my pennies worth, the Sop is the 'icing' on the brass band cake. It can make or break the whole effect and like cake icing, too hard, too thin, too colourful or sickly sweet sop playing can distract from the 'cake'. In my view some cornet players make the transition to sop playing but never manage to play in tune over the range required. A difficult instrument to master. Then again I'm a bass player so what do I know. Any suggestions who represents the candles, the nuts, the eggs and the candied(sp) peel in the brass band cake?
